More households now hire domestic help than in the Victorian period as one-in-four young adults admit to being inspired by period dramas such as Downton Abbey which romanticise the notion of servants.

A study of modern-day living in Britain has found while one in six households had some form of help in 1870, that figure now stood at a remarkable 27 per cent.

The survey also found that more than three quarters of a million of us are now living in ‘multigenerational' homes of at least three different generations.
