This posting was inspired by a colleague who once remarked to me in a playful, yet snarky tone, “Estate Management isn't rocket science.” The context of her comment was that education beyond a high school diploma was a waste of time and anyone can successfully manage all human resource and project management of a large estate comprised of multiple properties worldwide and a large staff, with no education needed.
Estate Management certainly isn't rocket science. It's something else altogether: Management Science – which is a legitimate science that should be studied by anyone earning their paychecks as a manager.
Some believe that good management practices are simply thought up randomly, or perhaps are skills that some are magically born with. Yet, management and leadership are learned skills from a variety of sources and experiences in life – and an enormous selection of academic resources are available to those who wish to maximize their value to their employers.
Management has evolved considerably in recent decades, theories and practices developed from valid scientific measurements of how people respond to their work environments and are motivated (or not) to perform their jobs. This is psychology for the workplace and is useful to any manager or leader of others, in virtually any industry – and the domestic industry does not possess a waiver from employers' expectations of good management skills (at the good estates to be employed on, anyway)…
