They’ve shed the Victorian-era tuxedos and the strict rules of etiquette, but a man who’s billed as “Canada’s most famous butler” – and runs a successful training school producing the next era of domestic staff – is proof that butlers aren’t just relics of a bygone era.
London’s oldest home is shining the spotlight on a little-known part of Eldon House’s history – the servants and staff who waited on the Harris family for decades – with a series of events this spring, including a talk by Charles MacPherson about the evolution of domestic service.

“The butler, to me, is not the person who just answers the phone or the door or serves tea,” MacPherson said.
“The butler is really the person who makes your life easier, who is really there to deal with the day-to-day mundane things, whether it’s grocery shopping, getting the car to the mechanic for an oil change, dealing with the furnace repair.”
